What are Implant Restorations Made Of?

Implant RestorationsDental implant restorations enhance the look and feel of your mouth in the way that you desire. Today's advanced technology allows for the restoration of the visible portion of a dental implant. This is the portion that is on the very top of the implant, visible to all when you open your mouth to laugh, eat, talk and interact with others.

In many cases, an implant will wear down over time and require professional care. Thankfully, we can restore an aged crown, denture or bridge with modern dental technology.

Today's implant restorations are quite durable to boot. It does not matter if you have lost plenty of teeth or if the location of your missing teeth is a challenge. Dental implant restorations will return your smile to its former glory.

About Restorations

People may wonder why the fixtures atop dental implants are referred to as restorations. The namesake is due to the fact that dental implants or restorations, restore the appearance and even the functionality of the teeth. While baby teeth are only the first set of teeth that an individual will have, permanent adult teeth do not grow back after falling out.

If a professional has to remove a tooth due to infection, then there is no chance of a new tooth growing in the infected tooth's place. Fortunately, dental restorations allow for us to restore the patient's teeth for a natural appearance and full functionality. We can place restorations, such as dental bridges and dental crowns, atop the natural teeth. However, some patients replace these restorations with dental implants. New versions of restorations are available that can rest atop dental implants.

Functionality and Quality

The restoration functions as the visible portion of the tooth. We will design the restoration to best match the individual patient's oral health care and aesthetic needs. As an example, an overdenture might require replacing upwards of a full arch of teeth atop several implant posts. In other cases, we can replace a single tooth with a porcelain crown atop one implant post.  During an examination, we will help determine the best restoration combination for the patient's unique mouth.

Since no patient is exactly the same, we will customize the restoration with a mold before fabricating the specific restoration. Once the restoration is complete, we will then attach it to the patient's teeth at another appointment. A small piece that is known as the abutment functions as a transition between the restoration and the dental implant.

In other instances, we can glue restorations to the abutment or implant through a process known as cementing or bonding. It is also possible to screw the restoration into an implant.
