Smile Makeover Treatment: Implant Dentures
To repair your smile, implant dentures might be the right solution for you. You should not have to live with missing teeth any longer. These dentures can restore your ability to eat and speak. You can also improve your self-esteem and be comfortable in social settings again. As you consider how to revitalize your appearance, your dentist can help you make the right choice.
Factors that lead to tooth loss
Teeth are made of the strongest substance in the body. This does not mean that teeth cannot suffer damage or fall out. People who seek implant dentures may have lost teeth due to poor dental habits. A lack of brushing and flossing can lead to decay and damage. Eventually, the teeth may fall out, or the dentist may have to extract them. Injuries from accidents or hard blows to the face can dislodge teeth as well.
A description of implant dentures
Traditional dentures consist of an acrylic gum-colored base and plastic artificial teeth. The dentures fit in the person’s mouth and will rest on the gums. With implant-supported dentures, the base snaps into titanium implants. Traditional dentures are removable for cleaning and care. However, implant-supported dentures are permanent; only the dentist should take them out. Both types help the patient resume regular mouth functions.
The process
Getting implant dentures can be a complex and lengthy process. The dentist will first examine the patient and extract any remaining damaged teeth, if necessary. Next, there will be a series of X-rays and impressions. These go to an off-site lab where a technician will start to make the dentures.
At a subsequent appointment, the dentist will start the implanting process. First, the dentist numbs the patient. Once the patient is comfortable, the dentist makes an incision in the gum and inserts screw-like posts deep into the jawbone. After a period of healing over the next few months, the patient returns to the office. The dentist then attaches an abutment to the posts.
By this time, the apparatus should be ready for the patient. The dentist attaches it to the abutments, checking to ensure the fit is right. The patient will test their bite to make sure it is comfortable.
Advantages over traditional dentures
Some people may not like how long the process takes to get implant dentures. It may also not be as convenient not to have the option to remove them. Still, these types of dentures have benefits. Implant-supported dentures will not slip or fall out, as regular ones often do. They also strengthen the bones and keep them from shrinking. Patients should not have to worry about these dentures rubbing against the gums and causing sores either.
